La plantá
The day of the Plantá is a big day, today the project comes together and the Hoguera is seen in motion for the first time by all. The pieces arrive bit by bit throughout the day a few house before the sun sets and the temperature cools works begins to take place in putting this pieces together. The first to go up are the dome structures around the Hoguera, which acts like frames, and have been pre made in the workshop to ease the stress on site. Once erected they are then connected with planks of wood rotating the Hoguera and ensuring its strength.
Once the stucture is in place the balls begin to rise to their position, elegantly hanging in the center of the dome. There are two rings from where balls hang all coloufully decorated and sybolic to the event. Tall ladders where needed in order to position the balls and some time was taken to make them all level. Once in place sand was used as a counter weight allowing tension to be created effecitaly allowing the movement to begin!
Let the party start with only a few days until the Hoguera is burnt!

Finally work has began as we get closer to the big day, the balls are beginning to shine like rainbows and the structure is taking form. Paco and the family are working incredibly hard to ensure all the small details are there and visible. They are adding some of their own touches and techniques having such experience making hogueras and we are delighted they are doing so. This project is now not only ours but shared and incorporated with other artist which is one of the beautiful things when designing, the collaboration. We still have work to do; the structure requires movement and needs to be sturdy. We will update you soon with news!
Finalmente el trabajo ha comenzado que nos acercamos al gran día, las bolas empiezan a brillar como el arco iris y la estructura está tomando forma. Paco y la familia están trabajando muy duro para asegurar que todos los pequeños detalles están ahí y visible. Están añadiendo algunos de sus propios toques y técnicas que tienen dada la experiencia que tienen haciendo hogueras y estamos encantados de que lo están haciendo. Este proyecto ahora no es sólo nuestro, sino compartido y se incorporan con otros artistas que es una de las cosas mas bonitas cuando estas diseñando, la colaboración. Todavía tenemos trabajo que hacer; la estructura requiere el movimiento y tiene que ser robusta.

El Ninot y los artistas de Paco Granja!
En la última visita que hicimos al taller de construcción de la Hoguera surgió una actividad interesante que fue el diseño del ninot. Tradicionalmente las hogueras están compuestas por un cuerpo escultórico principal y unas escenas grotescas a su alrededor que representan o ridiculizan situaciones de la vida social y cuotidiana. Una de estas figuras se presenta a concurso y una de ellas es premiada. Pero como ya sabéis nuestra hoguera no cuenta con ningún escultura y uno de los miembros del equipo de construcción y yo empezamos a discutir de que era lo que íbamos a presentar al concurso. Finalmente acordamos un diseño sencillo que recrea el movimiento de una de las bolas y que puede ser manejado por un niño. Dicho monumento se colocará a la entrada del monumento para que los niños puedan vivir la experiencia de manejar su propia hoguera!
El ninot de la hoguera junto con el resto de participantes estará expuesto desde Mayo a Junio (30 May - 12 Jun)

Balls balls and more balls
Over the last few weeks we have had many interesting conversations with our fellow team in this new project, apart from being the most relaxed and welcoming people to their warehouse/workshop they also are real experts in the industry of the hoguera. I also am learning a ton of new information and furthermore expanding my hoguera Spanish vocabulary. We have started the making process and as you can probably guess from the title it has all been about the balls. In fact they had already started before we even knew about it and without knowing the scales but like I said they are true experts and they have made the molds of the three dimensions of the balls perfectly! Now it´s a matter of making the 72 balls needed for the hoguera.
En las últimas semanas hemos tenido muchas conversaciones interesantes con nuestro equipo de compañeros de este nuevo proyecto. Dicho equipo además de ser relajado y acogernos en su taller son también verdaderos expertos en la industria de las hogueras. Yo también estoy aprendiendo un montón de nueva información y, además, estoy ampliando mi vocabulario de hogueras en español. Hemos comenzado el proceso de toma de decisiones, como probablemente podeis adivinar por el título de este blog, hemos comenzado por la cuestión de las bolas. De hecho, ya habían comenzado antes incluso de conocer los detalles y sin tener clara la escala, pero como he dicho que son verdaderos expertos y han hecho los moldes de las tres dimensiones de las bolas a la perfección! Ahora Es una cuestión de hacer los 72 bolas necesarios para la hoguera.
I went to help and here is a little about my experience, I was greeted by the grandmother of the family who yes works there too for pleasure and is very pleasant indeed, after showing me where I could leave my bag she started to show me how to start filling the balls. The mold is made from plaster which is dry and hard now, and in a layering system we place sheets of ´carton pierda´ impossible to find a true translation (trust me I have tried) but it is very similar to Paper Mache only stronger. We layer 3 layers in each semi ball sticking them together with a PVC type glue mixed with water and flour brought to the boil ever so slightly. Once completed the edges are rolled inwards and placed in the sun, yes the sun, to dry and the process continues 144 times as each mold is only half a ball...
Fuimos a ayudar (bueno, yo) y fui recibida por la abuela de la familia que sí trabaja allí también por placer y es muy agradable, de hecho, después de mostrarme donde pude dejar mi bolsa empezó a enseñarme cómo podía comenzar a llenar las bolas. El molde está hecho de yeso, que es seco y duro ahora, y usando un sistema de capas de cartón y cola conformando el material conocido como 'cartón Pierda'. Consta de 3 capas en cada mitad bola pegadas juntas con un pegamento tipo PVC diluido en agua y harina y hervido ligaramente. Una vez completados los bordes se enrollan hacia adentro y se ponen al sol, sí, el sol, para que se seque y el proceso continúa 144 veces mas...

Our Hoguera is big, round in shape and most importantly has movement and encourages interaction. The idea is that people can enter the hoguera take the centerpiece cord and walk around the interior space, which activates the movement of the balls above. The movement is created by kinetic energy and the balls move vertically, up and down. The festival itself, which is revolved around the solstice, inspired the concept and therefore the balls represent the movement of the seasons, the colours changing from one season to another more importantly the spectator can take control of time and create their own dance as such to represent their own time.
Nuestra Hoguera es grande, de forma redonda y lo más importante tiene movimiento y alienta la interacción. La idea es que las personas pueden entrar en las hoguera toman el cordón central y caminar por el espacio interior, que activa el movimiento de las bolas encima. El movimiento se crea por la energía cinética y las bolas se mueven verticalmente, hacia arriba y abajo. El festival en sí, que gira en torno al solsticio, inspiró el concepto, por lo que las bolas representan el movimiento de las estaciones, los colores que cambian de una temporada a otra y lo más importante el espectador puede tomar el control de tiempo y crear su propia danza como tal a representar a su propio tiempo.
Now we are going to meet the constructors who are a renowed family who dedicate their time to making Hogueras and have so for many year. Paco Granja´s workshop in is San Vincente, some 20 kilometers from us. Hopefully they wont mind use (or me rather) giving a helping hand!
Ahora vamos a conocer a los constructores que son una familia de amigos que dedican su tiempo a hacer Hogueras y llevan muchos años trabajando en ellas. El taller de Paco Granja esta en San Vicente, a unos 20 kilómetros de nosotros.
An hoguera was born...
Two weeks ago Jose Maria and I began a beautiful project together which in reality has only just begun.... The first and most important part of this experience was meeting each other and deciding to embark on a creative journey together and enter an experimental design competition to design and later build and construct an hoguera (a beautiful tall comical structure made of wood and paper mache) The festival of San Juan takes place every year in June and celebrates the solstice, the festival lasts 5 days and the city is filled with hogueras (normally at least one in every neighborhood) which, on the last night are burnt leaving the city glowing and warm.
Hace dos semanas, José María y yo comenzamos un hermoso proyecto conjunto que en realidad acaba de empezar.... La primera y más importante parte de esta experiencia fue conocernos y tomar la decisión de embarcarnos en un viaje creativo conjunto y entrar en un concurso de diseño experimental para diseñar y luego construir una hoguera para la fiesta de San Juan que se celebra todos los años en Junio y conmemora en su origen el solsticio, el festival tiene una duración de 5 días y la ciudad está llena de hogueras, en la última noche se queman todas dejando la ciudad en llamas.

We put our heads together and starting designing what we thought would be an amazing hoguera. Combining our ideas and expertise, two and half weeks later we presented our project... will we win?
Pusimos nuestras cabezas juntas y comenzamos el diseño de lo que pensamos que sería una hoguera increíble. Combinando nuestras ideas y experiencias y dos y media semanas después presentamos nuestro proyecto ... ¿Ganarémos?
